AbstractHereditary spastic paraplegias (HSP) share as cardinal feature progressive spastic gait disorder. SPG4 accounts for about 25% of cases and is caused by mutations in theSPAST gene. Although HSP is an upper motor neuron disease, the relevance of non-motor symptoms is increasingly recognized because of the potential response to treatment. Our study sets out to evaluate non-motor symptoms and their relevance with regard to health-related quality of life. In 118 genetically confirmed SPG4 cases and age- and gender-matched controls, validated questionnaires were used to evaluate fatigue, depression, pain, and restless le...

Topal, Dayna McManusAbstractA 78 year old man developed a methicillin sensitive Staphylococcus aureus (MSSA) post-operative wound infection following an elective L2-L4 laminectomy. He was treated with surgical debridement which was to be followed by a planned 6 weeks course of cefazolin. However, two weeks post debridement, a follow-up MRI revealed an L3-L5 epidural abscess, septic arthritis and vertebral osteomyelitis prompting repeat surgical debridement. No purulence was noted, and operative cultur...

Abstract Background: Historically, Iceland has been an iodine-sufficient nation due to notably high fish and milk consumption. Recent data suggest that the intake of these important dietary sources of iodine has decreased considerably. Objective: To evaluate the iodine status of pregnant women in Iceland and to determine dietary factors associated with risk for deficiency. Methods: Subjects were women (n = 983; 73% of the eligible sample) attending their first ultrasound appointment in gestational weeks 11-14 in the period October 2017-March 2018. Spot urine samples were collected for assessment of urina...

The objective of this study was to prospectively test the performance of POC cTn measurement by paramedics to detect myocardial infarction (MI) among patients transported to the ED for acute chest pain. Methods: A prospective cohort study of adults with non-traumatic chest pain was conducted in 3 Emergency Medical Services agencies (12/2016-1/2018). Patients with ST-elevation MI on ECG were excluded. During ambulance transport paramedics initiated intravenous access, collected blood, and used a POC device (i-STAT; Abbott Laboratories) to measure cTn. Following ED arrival, participants received standard evaluations including...
