ni Frantz Gubbay Zika virus (ZIKV) is a mosquito-borne flavivirus associated with a febrile illness as well as severe complications, including microcephaly and Guillain-Barré Syndrome. Antibody cross-reactivity between flaviviruses has been documented, and in regions where ZIKV is circulating, dengue virus (DENV) is also endemic, leaving the potential that previous exposure to DENV could alter clinical features of ZIKV infection. To investigate this, we performed a retrospective case-control study in which we compared Canadian travellers who had been infected with ZIKV and had serological findings indi...

In this study, we correlate single breath count (SBC) with arterial blood gas (ABG) parameters to derive a cutoff point for intubation and mechanical ventilation (MV) in Guillain-Barré Syndrome (GBS). Ninety-four GBS patients underwent serial SBC at 2 Hz using an audio program. ABG was done at admission, and repeated if SBC declined. The patients were intubated based on “the modified intubation criteria” as follows (a + b or c): (a) hypoxia (PaO2  50 mm of Hg); (c) acidosis (pH  20% had a negative predictive value of 88.5% (95% CI 77.0%–96.0%) and 80.8% (95% ...

Authors: Maucourant C, Queiroz GAN, Samri A, Grassi MFR, Yssel H, Vieillard V Abstract Zika virus (ZIKV) is an emerging arbovirus that causes a mosquito-borne disease. Although infection with ZIKV generally leads to mild disease, its recent emergence in the Americas has been associated with an increase in the development of the Guillain-Barré syndrome in adults, as well as with neurological complications, in particular congenital microcephaly, in new-borns. Over the five past years, through the combined efforts of the scientific community, comprehensive remarkable progress aimed at deciphering the clinical, ...

AbstractGuillain –Barré syndrome (GBS) is an acute-onset, immune-mediated polyradiculoneuropathy, often precipitated by an antecedent infection. An association of GBS with vector-borne viral infections has been suggested, with evidence for the involvement of Zika, Dengue, Chikungunya and West Nile virus (WNV). Th is prospective case–control study was conducted to identify vector-borne viral infections in GBS. Thirteen individuals newly diagnosed as GBS were enrolled. Disease severity, prognostic factors and nerve conduction patterns were assessed. Eleven individuals with non-infectious conditions requiri...

Zika virus (ZIKV) is an emerging arthropod-borne virus and belongs to the Flaviviridae family. The infection of ZIKV has become the global health crisis because of its rapid spread and association with severe neurological disorders, including congenital microcephaly and Guillain-Barre Syndrome. To identify host factors contributing to ZIKV pathogenesis, transcriptomic landscape in ZIKV-infected cells was examined with mRNA microarray analysis and we observed that the expression of hydroxycarboxylic acid receptor 2 (HCAR2) could be significantly induced by ZIKV infection. By utilizing two IRE1 inhibitors and XBP1-specific s...

CONCLUSIONS: A constant alpha-spending plan appears to be robust, in terms of power and time to detect a signal, across a range of these parameters, including alternate monitoring start dates based on either cumulative vaccinations or GBS claims observed, frequency of monitoring, hypothetical relative risks, and vaccine uptake patterns.
