(The Francis Crick Institute) Breast cancer cells break away and spread to other parts of the body relatively late on in breast tumor development, an international team of scientists has shown. The research, jointly led by Dr. Peter Van Loo at the Francis Crick Institute, could help refine cancer therapy and is published in the journal Genome Biology.

In this study, pegylated (stealth) liposomes conjugated to human serum albumin (HSA) were investigated for the delivery of a model drug (calcein) to breast cancer cells. (University of Basel) Scientists from the University of Basel and the University Hospital of Basel have deciphered the molecular mechanisms linking breast cancer metastasis with increased stress hormones. In addition, they found that synthetic derivatives of stress hormones, which are frequently used as anti-inflammatory in cancer therapy, decrease the efficacy of chemotherapy.
