A Respected Surgeon Says Get A Second Opinion

Recently, I interviewed Dr. Marty Makary, author of Unaccountable: What Hospitals Won't Tell You and How Transparency Can Revolutionize Health Care, one of the most influential recent health policy books. He has some fresh views on the ethical importance of transparency, and challenges his medical colleagues on more open and honest ways to communicate with patients. Here is Part One of my interview with him. Leah Binder: You’ve become a regular on the media and the speaking circuit. What many people don’t realize is that you’re also still a busy practicing surgeon at Johns Hopkins in Baltimore. Tell us about that. Marty Makary: Well, I love being a doctor. I find taking care of patients to be the most rewarding thing anyone can do. I operate two to three days a week, doing complex pancreas operations. Many of these are minimally invasive procedures, which has become my niche area within our group of four pancreas surgeons at Johns Hopkins. I also occasionally do gallbladders, hernias, and what we call bread and butter surgery.
