Episiotomy and severe perineal trauma among Eastern African immigrant women giving birth in public maternity care: A population based study in Victoria, Australia.

CONCLUSIONS: Overall, Eastern African immigrant women experienced elevated odds of episiotomy and severe perineal tear. Health care providers need to be mindful of the increased risk of severe perineal tear in these women and enhance efforts in identification and treatment of severe perineal trauma to minimise associated short and long term morbidity. Strategies to reduce unneeded episiotomy and ways of enhancing perineal safety are also needed. PMID: 27889259 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

ConclusionKnowing which factors are associated with the manifestation of SUI and dyspareunia in women after delivery is useful for identifying susceptible or "at risk" patients. These variables should be included in the clinical history of every pregnant woman.

This study investigated whether the use of Hypericum perforatum (HP) oil used for wound care for women who had received an episiotomy to facilitate labour could be effective in facilitating healing.MethodsThis controlled single-blind and randomized experimental study with a pretest-posttest design. was conducted in a Training and Research Hospital for Gynecology and Obstetrics in Northern Turkey. The 135 women agreeing to participate in the study were randomised into 3 groups: 45 women who used only Saline Solution (SS), 45 women who were treated with HP oil and 45 women who received routine clinical care after episiotomy,...

This study investigates the influence of maternal age on birth procedure, gestational age, and rate of interventions during delivery. The influence of maternal parity is also analyzed. Material and Methods Data from the Austrian Register of Births was retrospectively collected and evaluated. The collected data was the data of all singleton live births in Austria between January 1, 2008 and December 31, 2016 (n = 686 272). Multiple births and stillbirths were excluded from the study. Maternal age and parity were analyzed in relation to predefined variables (birth procedure, gestational age, episiotomy in cas...

The objective of this study is the generation of descriptive data on the mode of delivery and on maternal and foetal complications in the case of foetal macrosomia. The causes and consequences of foetal macrosomia as well as the rate of shoulder dystocia are examined in relation to the severity of the macrosomia. Patients The study investigated all singleton births ≥ 37 + 0 weeks of pregnancy with a birth weight ≥ 4000 g at the Charité University Medicine Berlin (Campus Mitte 2001 - 2017, Campus Virchow Klinikum 2014 - 2017). Results 2277 consecutive newborns (birth w...

Abstract Objective To evaluate the association between the upright and supine maternal positions for birth and the incidence of obstetric anal sphincter injuries (OASIs). Methods Retrospective cohort study analyzed the data of 1,728 pregnant women who vaginally delivered live single cephalic newborns with a birth weight of 2,500 g. Multiple regression analyses were used to investigate the effect of the supine and upright positions on the incidence of OASIs after adjusting for risk factors and obstetric interventions. Results In total, 239 (13.8%) births occurred in upright positions, and 1,489 (86.2%) in supine positions. ...

Abstract BACKGROUND: The rate of obstetric anal sphincter injury has increased in recent years, particularly among operative vaginal deliveries. We sought to characterize temporal trends in episiotomy use and to quantify the association between episiotomy and obstetric anal sphincter injury. METHODS: Using a population-based retrospective cohort study design of hospital data from 2004 to 2017, we studied all vaginal deliveries of singleton infants at term gestation in Canada (excluding Quebec). Rates of obstetric anal sphincter injury were contrasted between women who had an episiotomy and those who did not. ...
