In this study, FYC and its main components dramatically suppressed the infiltration of inflammatory cells, reduced the production of IL-1β, TNF-α, and MCP-1, and elevated the IL-10 level to varying degrees. We also found that FYC and its main components inhibited the expression of BAX induced by infection and increased the expression of Bcl-2. FYC, GA, EA, and SY could also block the activation of the NF-κB pathway. Finally, we found that the phosphorylation of JNK could be decreased by FYC, GA, and SY. FYC and its main components exhibit anti-inflammatory effect on a pathogen-induced PID model by regulati...

Conclusions: Some CHMs seem effective and safe as alternative remedies for patients with IPF, suggesting that further study of CHMs in the treatment of IPF is warranted. Although this systematic review suggests that CHMs may have positive effect on quality of life, 6-minute walk test distance, and lung function (TLC, DLOC%) and seem to be relatively safe during the course of treatment, the results must be treated with great caution because of the methodological flaws of the included trials. Long-term and high-quality trials are needed in the future to provide clear evidence for the use of CHMs. PMID: 31312224 [PubMed]

The objective of this study was to assess antioxidative capacity of L. robustum, and its protective effects and mechanisms against hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) - induced toxicity in Caco-2 cells. Total phenolic contents, free radical scavenging activity, and reducing capacity of L. robustum were measured. The effects of L. robustum on the cell viability and antioxidant defense system were explored. The expression of nuclear factor E2 related factor 2 (Nrf2) and antioxidant genes: quinone oxidoreductase 1 (NQO1), heme oxygenase-1 (HO-1), and glutamate cysteine ligase (GCL) were analyzed by western blot and qPCR. Pretreatment of...

Conclusion: Compared with the placebo, RJ supplementation demonstrated a statistically significant decrease in total cholesterol (6.7%; p=0.041) and inflammatory marker C-reactive protein (19%; p=0.027), whereas significant increases were observed in anti-inflammatory marker adiponectin (34%; p=0.011), endogenous antioxidants bilirubin (35%; p=0.002) and uric acid (5%; p=0.018), total antioxidant capacity in serum (54%; p=0.005), and leptin (17%; p=0.025). The present study demonstrated positive effects of RJ administration on lipid profile, satiety, inflammation, and antioxidant capacity in overweight adults. Therefore, o...

(Natural News) Researchers from Shandong University of Traditional Chinese Medicine investigated the mechanism-based chemopreventive potential of a Chinese herbal formula called yang he hua yuan (YHHY) decoction using a 7,12-dimethylbenz(a)anthracene (DMBA)-induced rat mammary carcinogenesis model. The results of their study appeared in the journal BMC Complementary and Alternative Medicine. The development of safe and effective chemopreventive agents...

Authors: Ye Q, Zhang Y, Fu J, Zou Y, Zhao W, Chen C, Liu K Abstract The purpose of this experiment is to establish a rat model of thin endometrium and to explore the effect of ligustrazine on the thin endometrium of rats. The thin endometrium model was made by using infusing absolute ethyl alcohol into the uterine cavity. The thickness of endometrium was measured. Hematoxylin-Eosin (HE) staining was used to observe the histopathological changes of endometrium. The mRNA levels of VEGF, VEGFR-2, PI3K, and AKT were detected by RT-PCR. Western blotting was used to detect the levels of VEGF, VEGFR-2, PI3K, and AKT in en...

Authors: Li L, Wang H, Qian J, Wei G, Ding R, Hu C, Fang D, Jiang Z, Bi L, Song J, Ma J, Qin F, Huang X, Cao M, Huo J Abstract The traditional Chinese medicine decoction FuFangChangTai (FFCT) has been used in the therapy of colon cancer clinically, yielding alleviated toxicity and enhanced immunity. In our previous study, FFCT exerted its antitumor activity not only by inducing apoptosis but also by activating autophagy to eliminate tumor cells. However, its mechanism is not well understood. The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship between macrophages activation and FFCT-induced autophagy. Resu...

Authors: Tao F, Zhang Y, Zhang Z Abstract Mitochondria are highly dynamic double-membrane organelles which play a well-recognized role in ATP production, calcium homeostasis, oxidation-reduction (redox) status, apoptotic cell death, and inflammation. Dysfunction of mitochondria has long been observed in a number of human diseases, including cancer. Targeting mitochondria metabolism in tumors as a cancer therapeutic strategy has attracted much attention for researchers in recent years due to the essential role of mitochondria in cancer cell growth, apoptosis, and progression. On the other hand, a series of studies h...
