Sensory over responsivity and obsessive compulsive symptoms: a cluster analysis.

The heterogeneous nature of Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD) presents challenges for both accurate diagnosis and the prescription of an appropriate therapy [1]. Sensory Over-Responsivity (SOR), which is often reported among individuals with OCD [2], may be a relevant criterion for both diagnosis and therapy choice. There is evidence supporting a sensory OCD subtype, i.e. the positive correlation of sensory symptoms with early onset, familial OCD, and a higher proportion of males [3]. Sensory vulnerability and early atypical sensory experience may present a risk factor for the eventual development of OCD [5,6], and may serve as a developmental marker for a unique subtype of OCD.
