Peanut Allergy Patch Showing Promise

BOSTON (CBS) – Millions of children have a peanut allergy in this country and it is one of the allergies that often lasts into adulthood, but a peanut patch could one day help. The peanut patch is a daily skin patch that contains tiny, tiny doses of peanut protein that helps train the immune system to tolerate peanuts. In a small study of nearly 75 young people, they found that almost half of the low dose patch group and almost half of the high dose group were able to eat 10 times more peanut protein than they could at baseline after a year. Kids younger than 12 had higher success rates than older patients, and larger trials are needed before the patch can be approved by the FDA.
