Paramedic Loses Eye to Rare Infection

Campaigners are raising awareness of a rare infection caused by waterborne microscopic amoebae after a paramedic lost his eye to the condition. Andrew Carthew assumed he had conjunctivitis when he woke up with a sore eye one morning in June 2015.However, the pain and sensitivity to light continued to get worse, and after a week of tests and several hospital visits he was diagnosed with acanthamoeba keratitis.
