Authors: Kang SM, Lim HW, Yu H Abstract Although sudden sensorineural hearing loss (SSNHL) affects chronic kidney disease (CKD) patients more frequently than non-CKD patients, few reports have described SSNHL in dialysis patients. We aimed to review the characteristics of SSNHL in chronic dialysis patients and evaluate treatment responses to steroid therapy. We retrospectively reviewed the records of dialysis patients diagnosed with idiopathic SSNHL at Asan Medical Center between January 2000 and December 2014. Pure tone and speech audiometry analyzes were performed before and 2 weeks and 2 months aft...

Conclusion MTSS involves a lower risk of vertigo than does TSS. MTSS helps to prevent damage to the footplate, thereby reducing the risk of footplate floating. Therefore, MTSS provides a means to overcome some of the limitations associated with the narrow surgical field in Asian patients.

Conclusions: Disrupted ionic homeostasis in the inner ear, but not the EH, may contribute to changes in the –SP/AP ratio. The relevance of glycerol test in identifying EH through detection of hearing changes needs further investigation in the future.

Authors: Moon KR, Park S, Jung Y, Lee A, Lee JH Abstract Objective: The aim of the present study was to examine the relative role of anxiety sensitivity and hearing loss on the tinnitus symptoms severity in a large clinical sample of patients with tinnitus. Methods: A total of 1,705 patients with tinnitus who visited the tinnitus clinic underwent the pure-tone audiometric testing and a battery of self-report questionnaires. Multiple linear regression analyses were performed to identify the relationship of anxiety sensitivity and hearing loss to tinnitus symptoms severity. Results: Both anxiety sensitivity a...

Diagnostic audiologic procedures for otosclerosis are effective tools in identifying this condition. Audiometric data usually demonstrate a conductive hearing loss at the early stages of otosclerosis. Modern middle ear analysis procedures are becoming more popular in the better diagnosis of otosclerosis. In clinical practice, cochlear otosclerosis can also be observed. Audiologic rehabilitation of otosclerosis includes fitting of hearing aids and implantable hearing devices. Current hearing technology enables patients who do not pursue surgical correction to function well and significantly improve their communication and q...

CONCLUSIONS: Diabetes is associated with bilateral sensorineural hearing loss, especially at high frequencies. While pre-diabetes is not necessarily associated with significant hearing loss, there may be cochlear malfunction, as indicated by DPOAEs. Thus, patients with pre-diabetes who have tinnitus may benefit from DPOAEs and PTA tests. PMID: 29347860 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Objective: To assess the prevalence of hearing loss and factors affecting hearing care use among Asian Americans, using the first nationally representative sample of Asian Americans. Study Design: National cross-sectional survey. Setting: Ambulatory examination centers. Patients: Three thousand six hundred twelve adults (522 Asian American) aged 20 to 69 in the 2011 to 2012 National Health and Examination Survey with pure-tone audiometry. Main Outcome Measure(s): Percentage with hearing loss, undertaking a hearing test before the study, and hearing aid use. Hearing loss was defined as better hearing ear speec...
