Epinephrine, glucagon, insulin "big picture" clarification

I have a couple of big picture questions that have come up when reviewing metabolism and I think they reflect some fundamental issues in my understanding. Sorry I couldn't be more concise. 1. I don't understand the purpose of gluconeogenesis/ glycogenlysis. I see the purpose is to "maintain blood sugar levels" but why does blood sugar need to be maintained?
