Co-administration of paediatric vaccines in Shanghai, China

The World Health Organization (WHO) recommends countries to include 11 antigens on a publicly-funded, paediatric Expanded Program on Immunization (EPI): Bacillus Calmette-Gu érin, hepatitis B, polio, diphtheria-tetanus-pertussis (DTP), Haemophilus influenzae type b (Hib), pneumococcus, rotavirus, measles, and rubella.1 Some of these diseases are still a significant source of morbidity and mortality in China, for example, there are 19,000 deaths from Hib disease each ye ar.2 China's EPI includes all of these vaccines, except for the Hib vaccine, the pneumococcal conjugate vaccine (PCV), and rotavirus, and the process to add vaccines onto the EPI is opaque.
