Discussion Gastrostomy tubes (GT or GTubes) have been used to support patients for about a century. They are placed between the abdominal skin and the stomach either percutaneously or surgically. The tubes can be a standard long tube with either a bumper or inflatable balloon internally and externally they have a retention piece to hold the GT in place. A button or low profile tube are similar but extend just beyond the skin. Reasons for GT placement include: Nutritional support Hydration maintenance Medication management Aspiration avoidance Gastric stasis decompression Obstruction bypass Quality of life improvement for...

We describe the design and preclinical development of AB-SA01, a fixed-composition bacteriophage product intended to treat Staphylococcus aureus infections. AB-SA01 contains three naturally occurring, obligately lytic myoviruses related to Staphylococcus phage K. AB-SA01 component phages have been sequenced and contain no identifiable bacterial virulence or antibiotic resistance genes. In vitro, AB-SA01 killed 94.5% of 401 clinical Staphylococcus aureus isolates, including methicillin-resistant and vancomycin-intermediate ones for a total of 95% of the 205 known multidrug-resistant isolates. The spontaneous frequency of re...

ConclusionsThe results of the current study suggest that real-world symptom data collected through the ePRO application on cancer patients receiving ICI therapy aligns with the data from clinical trials. Correlations between different symptoms occur, which might reflect therapeutic efficiency, side effects, or tumor progression. These correlations should be further investigated with data coupled to clinical outcomes.

Publication date: February 2019Source: Current Opinion in Virology, Volume 34Author(s): Lin-Fa Wang, Danielle E AndersonIn the last two decades, several high impact zoonotic disease outbreaks have been linked to bat-borne viruses. These include SARS coronavirus, Hendra virus and Nipah virus. In addition, it has been suspected that ebolaviruses and MERS coronavirus are also linked to bats. It is being increasingly accepted that bats are potential reservoirs of a large number of known and unknown viruses, many of which could spillover into animal and human populations. However, our knowledge into basic bat biology and immuno...

Zika continues to be the virus of the day for returning travelers, but there are several other diseases that we need to consider in these patients when they present to us in the emergency department. Chikungunya is epidemic in many of the same countries as Zika and can be even more devastating. And Avian and MERS-CoV is still present in many countries. Unlike patients infected with Zika virus, these patients do require isolation to protect our health care staff from infection. Chikungunya Chikungunya, which means “to walk bent over,” was likely endemic but unrecognized in the United States before the mos...

CONCLUSION: Prevention is based on compulsory meningococcal vaccination, vaccination against seasonal influenza and pneumococcal infections for pilgrims at high risk of contracting the infection, and on vaccination against hepatitis A. Updating immunization for diphtheria/tetanus/poliomyelitis/pertussis and measles/mumps is also crucial and pilgrims must comply with hygiene precautions. South Korea is grappling with an outbreak of Middle East Respiratory Syndrome that has killed two and infected 30 people in total. In the same virus family as the common cold and SARS, the illness is a highly lethal respiratory disease that can also cause pneumonia and kidney failure before death. South Korea's Patient Zero is a businessman who had just traveled through Saudi Arabia, a country that has seen over 1,000 cases of the disease since it was first discovered back in 2012. Little is known about MERS, but in a review paper published Wednesday in the medical journal The Lancet, researchers Stanley Perlman of the U...
