Heart Score estimation by specialized nurses in a Greek urban population.

CONCLUSIONS: In the present study, specialized nurses estimated the HeartScore in a Greek urban population. The majority of the studied population was undiagnosed and untreated. These results highlight the necessity for both primary and secondary prevention programs that can be carried out by specialized nurses. Such programs may improve the diagnosis and treatment of CVD risk factors; early initiation and optimization of therapy as well as management of drug intolerance (e.g. statins) can contribute to CVD risk reduction. This study aimed to investigate if statin use in cancer survivors was inversely associated with all-cause mortality. Methods and ResultsData from the 2002 to 2015 National Health Insurance Service-National Health Screening Cohort (NHIS-HEALS) were used. The Kaplan-Meier estimator was used to estimate the survival function according to statin usage. Cox proportional hazards regression models were adopted after stepwise adjustment for potential confounders to calculate hazard ratios (HRs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) for all-cause mortality. The median follow-up duration was 10.0 years. Statin users had a higher percent...

AbstractPurpose of the ReviewPeripheral artery disease (PAD) affects close to 200 million people worldwide. Claudication is the most common presenting symptom for patients with PAD. This review summarizes the current diagnostic and treatment options for patients with claudication. Comprehensive history and physical examination in order to differentiate between claudication secondary to vascular disease vs. neurogenic causes is paramount for initial diagnosis. Ankle-brachial index is the most commonly used test for screening and diagnostic purposes. Treatment consists of four different approaches, which are best utilized in...

This study aimed to define associations between ER and local risk factors, including CA geometry and traditional systemic risk factors for ischemic events, to determine whether ER could serve as a clinical marker of carotid vulnerable plaque. METHODS: The authors retrospectively analyzed 66 patients with CA stenosis who were scheduled to undergo carotid endarterectomy or CA stenting. They calculated ER ratios in the internal CA (ICA) from long-axis MR images and as the maximal distance between the lumen and the outer borders of the plaque perpendicular to the axis of the ICA/the maximal luminal diameter of the distal ...

(CNN) — Leading nutritional experts in the United States and the UK are fired up about new dietary recommendations claiming there’s no need to reduce your red and processed meat intake for good health. “This is a very irresponsible public health recommendation,” said Dr. Frank Hu, who chairs the nutrition department at the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health. The new guidelines and five corresponding studies are part of a systematic analysis of existing research done by NutriRECS, a recently formed international group of nutritionists and health researchers. NutriRECS says its mission is to &l...

Abstract Statins are long known class of medicines and the most frequently prescribed drugs in cardiovascular pharmacotherapy, widely ordered not only in patients suffering from dyslipidemia, but also in patients with coronary artery disease, acute coronary syndromes, diabetes mellitus, stroke, hypertension, and chronic kidney disease, with or without coexisting dyslipidemia. However, several clinical trials have shown, that the advantages of statins goes beyond their reduction of the cholesterol level. Some crucial isoprenoid mediators which are highly essential for the activation of different intracellular/signa...
