Sodium Deoxycholate for Submental Contouring.

Sodium Deoxycholate for Submental Contouring. Skin Therapy Lett. 2016 Sep;21(5):1-4 Authors: Humphrey S, Beleznay K, Beleznay JD Abstract The chin and jaw line are integral parts of an individual's aesthetic profile, and the presence of submental fat detracts from this and can lead to displeasure with one's facial appearance. While liposuction and cosmetic surgery are regarded as the gold standard in treating submental fat, surgical intervention is not appealing to all patients and has potential surgical complications including longer recovery, and contour irregularities. Despite ample advances in aesthetic medicine to enhance the appearance of the face, very little is available in non-invasive options to reduce submental fat that has been supported by robust evidence. ATX-101, a proprietary formulation of deoxycholic acid that is synthetically derived, has been extensively explored in a vigorous clinical development program that has established the safety and efficacy of the injectable. It has recently received approval by regulatory authorities in Canada (Belkyra™) and the US (Kybella®) for the treatment of submental fat. PMID: 27603325 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Conclusions This surge in cosmetic complications occurred in the New Year period. Complications were seen after a wide range of surgical procedures. All patients required an inpatient stay, and two-thirds required surgery with a significant cost burden to the NHS. Patients are unaware of the risks involved, highlighted by the lack of preoperative counseling and follow-up. In addition, this series has highlighted the risks associated with traveling in the perioperative period, with 2 patients investigated for pulmonary embolus.

Two German companies have paired up on the development of a technology that could disrupt the breast implant market. BellaSeno plans to begin first-in-human clinical trials of the Senella scaffolds with Resomer in Germany this quarter. Evonik has agreed to supply its Resomer polymer for clinical and commercial use. The scaffolds are designed to guide the growth of natural tissue using the patient...
