Assessment of Motor Units in Neuromuscular Disease

AbstractThe motor unit comprises the anterior horn cell, its axon, and the muscle fibers that it innervates. Although the true number of motor units is unknown, the number of motor units appears to vary greatly between different muscles and between different individuals. Assessment of the number and function of motor units is needed in diseases of the anterior horn cell and other motor nerve disorders. Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis is the most important disease of anterior horn cells. The need for an effective biomarker for assessing disease progression and for use in clinical trials in amyotrophic lateral sclerosis has stimulated the study of methods to measure the number of motor units. Since 1970 a number of different methods, including the incremental, F-wave, multipoint, and statistical methods, have been developed but none has achieved widespread applicability. Two methods (MUNIX and the multipoint incremental method) are in current use across multiple centres and are discussed in detail in this review, together with other recently published methods. Imaging with magnetic resonance and ultrasound is increasingly being applied to this area. Motor unit number estimates have also been applied to other neuromuscular diseases such as spinal muscular atrophy, compression neuropathies, and prior poliomyelitis. The need for an objective measure for the assessment of motor units remains tantalizingly close but unfulfilled in 2016.

These fuels have high uranium density that contributes to fission, and by tailoring the ratio of 10B/11B, can also act as an integrated burnable poison. Understanding the thermophysical and mechanical properties of uranium borides, for w...

The difference in methodology of measurements could be a possible explanation. The purpose of this study was to investigate the immediate effect of calf pump activity used in the functional methods on ultrasound-measured venous reflux parame...

This study highlight the case report of a 25-year-old male patient admitted to the hospital complaining about right submandibular region swelling for approximately 1 year. On clinical examination, he presented a painless lesion with rapid and progressive growth and soft consistency. The tomographic and ultrasound results showed a hypodense and circumscribed lesion with cystic appearance content, measuring 2.1  × 5.7 × 2.0 cm, with lymphadenomegaly unilateral of inflammatory appearance.

Actually, it is difficult for a traditional piezoelectric ultrasound transducer to recover from physical damage caused by sudden impact, accidental scratches, and fatigue fracture. As a promising ultrasound device, the optoacoustic transducer, the cole part of which is inorganic-polymer ...

ygordobil D Abstract Lung ultrasound is an easily available, reproducible examination tool, both in ambulatory and critically-ill patients, which is used to evaluate congestion status and to differentiate the etiology of dyspnea. In this review, we explain lung ultrasound technique, acquisition protocols and their interpretation, as well as the evidence that shows its effectiveness among stable and critically-ill patients. Lung ultrasound should be used as an add-on to traditional physical examination in order to give an accurate diagnosis and a rapid treatment to patients with pulmonary congestion. PMID: 318...

Authors: Cichos KH, Lehtonen EJ, McGwin G, Ponce BA, Ghanem ES Abstract INTRODUCTION: Orthopaedic surgeons are wary of patients with neuromuscular (NM) diseases as a result of perceived poor outcomes and lack of data regarding complication risks. We determined the prevalence of patients with NM disease undergoing total joint arthroplasty (TJA) and characterized its relationship with in-hospital complications, prolonged length of stay, and total charges. METHODS: Data from the Nationwide Inpatient Sample from 2005 to 2014 was used for this retrospective cohort study to identify 8,028,435 discharges with total jo...
