UAMS Awards New Distinguished Endowed Chair in Oncology

The University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences on Friday announced that the J. Thomas May Distinguished Endowed Chair in Oncology has been awarded to internationally recognized radiation effects expert Dr. Martin Hauer-Jensen. He is director of the Division of Radiation Health in the UAMS College of Pharmacy and a professor of pharmaceutical sciences, surgery and pathology. The family of the late William E. "Bill" Clark donated $300,000 to turn the existing endowed chair into a distinguished endowed chair. "Martin’s strong leadership and vision are what draw people to this division," Stephanie Gardner, who was dean of the College of Pharmacy when Hauer-Jensen was recruited, said in a news release. "He’s not just an internationally recognized scientist; he’s a visionary, a mentor, a leader and a coach." His research focuses on making radiation therapy for cancer safer and more effective. Hauer-Jensen has also received the MERIT Award from the National Cancer Institute. He joined UAMS in 1990 and was appointed to the director post in 2008. Clark was chairman and CEO of CDI Contractors of Little Rock and a former member of the UAMS Foundation Fund Board. His family funded the chair to honor his friend, May, the former CEO of Simmons First National Corp. of Pine Bluff.
