Management and Outcome of Periprocedural Cardiac Perforation and Tamponade with Radiofrequency Catheter Ablation of Cardiac Arrhythmias: A Single Medium-Volume Center Experience

ConclusionIncidence of RFA-related CT in our medium-volume center was low and significantly associated with AF ablation. The outcome of CT was mostly favorable after pericardiocentesis, but readily accessible cardiothoracic surgery back-up should be mandatory in RFA centers.

CONCLUSIONS: In our site, TRB allowed for a histological diagnosis in 2/3 of patients for whom percutaneous ultrasound renal biopsy is contraindicated. This allowed us to diagnose and subsequently treat said patients. PMID: 32660793 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Authors: Calderone D, Capodanno D, Angiolillo DJ Abstract INTRODUCTION: - Ticagrelor is an antiplatelet agent acting through direct and reversible competitive inhibition of the platelet P2Y12 receptor. While the clinical merits of ticagrelor in patients who experienced an acute coronary syndrome are widely accepted, its role in stable coronary artery disease is less established. Recently, large-scale trials of ticagrelor have been published in this setting, including a trial in patients with diabetes mellitus (DM). AREAS COVERED: - This review aims to inform about recent findings on ticagrelor, by appraising th...

Authors: Kleinecke C, Gloekler S, Meier B Abstract INTRODUCTION: Atrial fibrillation (AF) is associated with an increased risk of stroke, morbidity and overall mortality. So far, oral anticoagulation (OAC) is the standard of care for stroke prevention, either with vitamin K antagonists or with non-vitamin K oral anticoagulants (NOACs). The left atrial appendage (LAA) can be eliminated by epicardial or endocardial exclusion. Left atrial appendage closure (LAAC) represents a mechanical thromboprophylaxis - which has also been termed mechanical vaccination - against stroke, bleeding and death. AREAS COVERED: Studi...

Authors: Zidan NI, AbdElmonem DM, Elsheikh HM, Metwally EA, Mokhtar WA, Osman GM Abstract Inherited thrombocytopenias are a heterogeneous group of diseases characterized by a reduced number of platelets and a bleeding tendency that ranges from very mild to life threatening especially in surgery. Mutations in the 5' untranslated region (UTR) of Ankirin repeat domain 26 (ANKRD26) are responsible for autosomal-dominant form of thrombocytopenia, that is known as ANKRD26-related thrombocytopenia (ANKRD26 RT), characterized by a moderate thrombocytopenia with mild propensity to bleeding and predisposition to hematologica...

Authors: White JR, Din S, Ingram RJM, Foley S, Alam MA, Robinson R, Francis R, Tucker E, Jalal M, Elphick D, Atallah E, Norman A, Amin M, Sajjad A, Heggs N, Meadowcroft S, Moran GW Abstract PURPOSE: Clinical trials have demonstrated efficacy of vedolizumab in ulcerative colitis (UC) and Crohn's disease (CD). Further real-world data is needed to inform clinical practice. The primary outcome was to assess corticosteroid-free and clinical remission after vedolizumab initiation. Secondary outcomes included effect on disease activity scores, biochemical markers, concomitant drug use, endoscopic remission, surgical inter...

CONCLUSION: Probiotics could be used during the treatment of peri-implant diseases. However, the most appropriate form of probiotic administration or the effectiveness of this approach are still unclear. There is currently insufficient evidence to demonstrate the benefits of the use of probiotics as an adjunctive therapy in patients with peri-implant diseases. PMID: 32655039 [PubMed - in process]

CONCLUSION: The OSFMI protocol led to clinical results comparable to those obtained with traditional SRP. Researchers are encouraged to test this protocol in randomized clinical trials with longer periods of observation. PMID: 32655038 [PubMed - in process]

Authors: Rivera-Caravaca JM, Esteve-Pastor MA, Camelo-Castillo A, Ramírez-Macías I, Lip GYH, Roldán V, Marín F Abstract INTRODUCTION: Oral anticoagulants (OAC) reduce stroke/systemic embolism and mortality risks in atrial fibrillation (AF). However, there is an inherent bleeding risk with OAC, where intracranial hemorrhage (ICH) is the most feared, disabling, and lethal complication of this therapy. Therefore, the optimal management of OAC-associated ICH is not well defined despite multiple suggested strategies. AREAS COVERED: In this review, the authors describe the severity and ris...

In this study we proposed and validated a model to identify AF by using facial video recordings. We analyzed photoplethysmographic imaging (PPGi) signals, extracted from video of a subject's face. Sixty-eight patients were included: 30 in sinus rhythm (SR), 25 in AF and 13 presenting with atrial flutter or frequent ectopic beats (ARR). Twenty-six indexes were computed. The dataset was divided in three subsets: the training, validation, and test set, containing, respectively, 58, 29, and 13% of the data. Mean of inter-systolic interval series (M), Local Maxima Similarity (LMS), and pulse harmonic strength (PHS) indexes were...
