Diagnostic reference levels in low- and middle-income countries: early "ALARAm" bells?

CONCLUSION: Published DRL data are deficient in the majority of LMICs, with the paucity most striking in low-income countries. DRL initiatives are required in LMICs to enhance dose optimization. PMID: 27519848 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

ConclusionsThe limited currently available evidence shows potential of certain MRI settings for the use in operative dentistry. Further research needs to assess the applicability and accuracy for dental hard tissues as well as cost-benefit aspects of the MRI technique.Clinical relevanceCertain MRI settings may have the potential as diagnostic tool in operative dentistry.

ConclusionsEVD output parameters and wean/clamp trial failures predicted shunt dependence in an age- and grade-adjusted multivariable model. Early VPS placement may be warranted in patients with MAGE score  ≥ 4, particularly following 2 failed wean trials.

Authors: Guo L, Chen B, Zhang L, Deng Y, Li H, Shi QD Abstract A 49-year-old female patient developed chest tightness and shortness of breath without apparent cause and presented to a local hospital. Chest radiography indicated increased thickening of the lung texture, increased multiple patchy densities in the lower lobes of the bilateral lungs and a slightly enlarged thyroid. The patient was treated for pulmonary infection with antibiotics but the symptoms persisted. A repeated CT scan revealed ground-glass attenuation of the bilateral lungs with multiple flaky exudates and visible bronchogenic signs. The symptom...

CONCLUSION: Peripherally inserted central catheter moves toward the heart when the arm position changes from abduction to adduction. Peripherally inserted central catheter tip placement at the peak P wave with patient's arm in adduction is accurate and can prevent the catheter from advancing too low. R wave can function as a reference for observing P wave changes during peripherally inserted central catheter placement. PMID: 31808719 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Authors: Choi HS, Park YB, Yoon HK, Lim SY, Kim TH, Park JH, Lee WY, Park SJ, Lee SW, Kim WJ, Kim KU, Shin KC, Kim DJ, Kim TE, Yoo KH, Shim JJ, Hwang YI Abstract BACKGROUND: Pulmonary functions are interpreted using predicted values from reference equations that vary with ethnicity, gender, age, height, and weight. The universally used Choi's reference equations are not validated for Korean populations, and the purpose of this study was to validate them and develop new reference equations. METHODS: Subjects with normal spirometry and chest radiographs, no co-morbidities, and non-smokers, from the Korean Nationa...

Multimodality imaging was performed on a 53-year-old woman who was suspected with malignant bone tumor in her left femoral midshaft on radiograph. An MRI demonstrated the lesion showed hypointensity on T1-weighted and high intensity on T2-weighted fat-saturated images. It was more extensive on MRI than that on radiograph, especially in bone marrow and parosteal soft tissue. The lesion accumulated radiotracer on bone scan and 18F-FDG PET/CT. Finally, a Langerhans cell histiocytosis was confirmed after surgery. The case cautions us Langerhans cell histiocytosis should be in the differential diagnosis spectrum in an adult wit...

We present the case of a young woman with bilateral osteonecrosis of the femoral head at varying stages of progression; we also highlight other important comorbid complications (eg, chronic pain requiring long-term opioids, debility, and social isolation) and postoperative outcomes. In this review, partly based on recommendations on osteonecrosis management from the 2014 evidence-based report on sickle cell disease from the National Heart, Lung and Blood Institutes, we also discuss early signs or symptoms of osteonecrosis of the femoral head, radiographic diagnosis and staging criteria, hydroxyurea effect on progression to...

This article discusses the methodology for detecting ctDNA in aggressive B-cell lymphomas, including digital polymerase chain reaction, targeted sequencing of immunoglobulin receptors, and targeted next-generation sequencing. The advantages of each of these methods are also compared, with a focus on promising clinical applications. These include identification of molecular subtypes (eg, cell-of-origin and double-hit lymphomas) from pretreatment plasma, molecular response prediction after an initial course of therapy, and early detection of relapsing disease prior to clinical relapse. Finally, this article discusses the cha...
