Background: Timely, accurate diagnosis of group A streptococci (GAS) pharyngitis prevents acute rheumatic fever and limits antibiotic overuse. The illumigene group A Streptococcus assay (Meridian Bioscience, Cincinnati, OH) is a molecular test for GAS pharyngitis with high sensitivity and specificity. We sought to determine whether the illumigene test is more likely than throat culture to be positive in patients without pharyngeal symptoms and explore the limits of detection of the test. Methods: Patients 3–17 years of age were eligible if they had no history of pharyngitis or use of antibiotics within the previ...

Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) is now one of the most common diagnoses made in a gastroenterology practice. From a conventional pathophysiological perspective GERD is conceptualized as incompetence of the antireflux barrier at the esophagogastric junction; the more severe that incompetence, the worse the disease. However, it is increasingly clear that many presentations of GERD represent distinct phenotypes with unique predisposing cofactors and pathophysiology outside of this paradigm. Three major consensus initiatives have grappled with this dilemma (the Montreal Consensus, The Rome Foundation, and the Lyon Conse...

In this study, we aimed to investigate the protective effects and underlying antitussive mechanisms of Suhuang on pulmonary function in ovalbumin (OVA)-induced CVA rats. Administration (i.g.) of Suhuang significantly alleviated pulmonary damage and dysfunction. Suhuang improved ER stress and PKCε translocation via regulation of Ca2+ trafficking. Suhuang also inhibited NLRP3 inflammasome activation, as evidenced by disrupting the assembly of NLRP3 inflammasome and reducing the expression of cleaved caspase-1, and decreased IL-1β secretion. Besides, it’s identified that TXNIP induction and RIP1-RIP3-Drp1 p...
