Several Dead and Injured as Storm Hits Macedonia Capital

SKOPJE, Macedonia (AP) — Macedonia is mourning the victims of a deadly storm that hit country's capital, leaving at least 21 people dead and more than 70 injured around Skopje. The Macedonian government has declared Monday a day of national mourning. Flags have been lowered and all sport events canceled. Authorities said police and army teams are still searching the northern suburbs of the Macedonian capital for six people still missing in the flash floods that hit late Saturday. On Sunday, the government declared a two-week state of emergency in the area hardest hit by the floods. Macedonian President Gjorge Ivanov visited flood site, saying "such a disaster has never occurred" in Skopje. The 28-nation European Union has offered assistance, as well as Macedonia's neighbors Serbia, Bulgaria, Kosovo and Albania. Copyright 2016 The Associated Press. All rights reserved.
