Tinnitus, the hearing of sound when no external sound is present, may cause severe distress and impair quality of life in 0.5-3% of the adult population [1]. Chronic severe tinnitus is often accompanied by severe insomnia, anxiety and depression, eventually resulting in suicide and requests for euthanasia [2]. For these patients, few treatment options are currently available and 20% remains affected despite treatment [1].

Conclusions: ISSNHL is not a predictor of an initial AMI in adult patients from the United States. Considerable inconsistencies in associations between cardiovascular risk factors and ISSNHL exist in the literature. Further work is needed to confirm or refute direct associations between cardiovascular disease risk factors and ISSNHL before definitive mechanistic conclusions can be made.
