A 61-year-old man with a medical history of coronary artery disease and symptomatic urolithiasis presented to the emergency department with new onset gross hematuria and 3 months of low back pain, urinary symptoms, and lower extremity edema. He described the back pain as throbbing and 8/10 in severity. The back pain was in the midline, lower thoracic area with radiation down both legs and to his left flank. The pain was worse when lying flat and improved when sitting in a chair. Acetaminophen, ibuprofen, transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation, and chiropractic intervention did not provide relief.
CONCLUSIONS: The study demonstrated that HILT is more effective than TENS in terms of pain reduction and that HILT can be used as an alternative to TENS. PMID: 31594200 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]
Conclusion: The first results clinically observed in the PWM-TENS technique are encouraging. The findings of this study confirm that this noninvasive strategy is suitable and useful for acute pains coming from the nociceptive, neuropathic and musculoskeletal origin. However, its efficiency is moderated and less adapted for low back pain. The experiments make it possible to estimate whether this modulated TENS method could improve existing anti-pain therapies, taking into account objective and subjective evaluation criteria. But this study must be followed by large population samples to answer all the problems of acute and chronic pains.
There is no consensus regarding the effectiveness of Transcutaneous Electrical Nerve Stimulation (TENS) for chronic musculoskeletal or low back pain. A review of previous trial methodology identified problems with treatment fidelity. Qualitative research with experienced TENS users identified specific contexts for TENS use, leading to individualised outcomes. There is little information available to guide the selection of Patient Reported Outcome Measures (PROMs) appropriate for TENS evaluation.
ConclusionIn this retrospective analysis, TENS has no predictive value in the selection of patients with low back pain for the PFNS treatment. PNFS is effective and safe to relieve significantly symptoms of chronic low back pain.
Conclusion: This study does not support the use of TENS in the treatment of patients with chronic LBP even though patients benefited from a therapeutic education program by a pain resource nurse. However, the higher number of premature withdrawals in the TENS group may be due to early withdrawal of patients who did not experience improvement of their symptoms.
