Supercomputers fire lasers to shoot gamma ray beam

Supercomputer simulations have shown scientists a new way to generate controlled beam of gamma rays from lasers. Nearly one million CPU hours on Stampede and Lonestar HPC systems were needed for the particle-in-cell simulation. The Texas Petawatt Laser will use the simulations to guide experimental verification later in 2016. Gamma ray production would make possible basic science research and benefit society through brain imaging, cancer therapy, and anti-terrorist cargo scanning.

Conclusion: The 18F-Ala-BF3 was successfully synthesized through one-step 18F-19F isotope exchange with fine specific activity and good radiochemical yield. Following in vitro bio-distribution and in vivo PET imaging in gastric tumor xenografts bearing mice and healthy mice revealed high tumor to normal tissue rate consist with fine tumor imaging of 18F-Ala-BF3. This study shed light on ASCT2 as a cancer biomarker for clinical diagnosis, and emphasized the usefulness of BAAs in tumor PET imaging. 18F-Ala-BF3 represents a useful molecular platform for tumor diagnosis.

In this study, we did not observe significant age-dependent upregulation of the prominent SASP cytokine Il6 in any tissue, although an upward trend was observed that was consistent in magnitude with previous observations in the heart and kidney. This study included 647 patients 80 to 106 years of age who had audiometric evaluations at an academic medical center (141 had multiple audiograms). The degree of hearing loss was compared across the following age brackets: 80 to 84 years, 85 to 89 years, 90 to 94 years, and 95 years and older.
