Suffering is a shared human experience that can be viewed integral part of life. Our suffering can range from mild to severe and can take the form of physical or mental and emotional pain. Whatever the form of our discomfort, we can agree that “suffering of the mind” is one of the biggest concerns of our time. The severity of mental health issues is on the rise, particularly the number of individuals experiencing depression. According to the World Health Organization (2017) over 300 million people are estimated to suffer from depression, equivalent to 4.4% of the world’s population. The Causes...

Authors: Zhang S, Zhang W, Zhou G Abstract Stroke causes disability and high mortality, while it can be prevented by increasing public awareness of risk factors. The common known risk factors are hypertension, atrial fibrillation, heart failure, smoking, alcohol consumption, low physical activity, overweight and hypercholesterolemia. However, the deep understanding of risk factors is limited. Moreover, more risk factor emerges in recent years. To further increase the awareness of risk factors for stroke prevention, this review indicates the reasonable application of antihypertensive agents according to the age-depe...

Publication date: Available online 16 March 2019Source: Composites Science and TechnologyAuthor(s): Kai Li, Hongji Li, Mingji Li, Cuiping Li, Lin Su, Lirong Qian, Baohe YangAbstractA carbon nanomaterial with core–shell structure was constructed from a composite of graphene and carbon nanotubes (CNT@G). A unique technology called polymer-assisted metal-catalyzed chemical vapor deposition (CVD) was used to first disperse a gold catalyst precursor, via the assistance of polyvinyl alcohol, on the CNT surface and then facilitate graphene growth by reducing the gold nanoparticles during CVD. A CNT@G/Ni electrode was then p...

This study aimed to assess the prevalence of problem gambling and its determinants among internal migrant workers in Muse, Myanmar, situated along the border with China. A cross-sectional study was conducted in April to May 2018 in Muse among 273 internal migrants. The prevalence of problem gambling was 58.2%. In a multiple logistic regression analysis, male gender, non-Burmese ethnicities, those aged 25  years and older, daily manual laborers/unemployed, and alcohol consumption remained significantly associated. Results suggest a high prevalence of problem gambling, which was associated with substance use. These find...

Authors: Draijer L, Benninga M, Koot B Abstract INTRODUCTION: Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is the most common chronic liver disease in children and adults in industrialized countries. Besides liver-related morbidity, NAFLD is also associated with an increased risk of cardiovascular disease, type 2 diabetes and mortality at adult age. However, despite the high prevalence and serious complications, diagnosing and staging of disease remains complicated due to a lack of accurate screening tools and non-invasive methods to detect fibrosis. Areas covered: Recent insights in epidemiology, pathogenesis, diagno...

Publication date: Available online 16 March 2019Source: Materials Chemistry and PhysicsAuthor(s): Huimin Zhu, Wenyuan Gao, Shuang Yan, Meihong Niu, Guishan Liu, Hongshun HaoAbstractNovel composite sub-micron fibers materials, consisting of superfine powdered diatomite (SPD) and fibrous poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA), were fabricated by electrospinning. SPD was obtained through high energy ball milling with 10% (wt%) Polyvinyl pyrrolidone (PVP) as dispersant for 6 h. The diameters of SPD (400 nm-1000nm) were 30 times less than that of the normal powdered diatomite particles, and SPD also had pores inside based on Rhodamine B...
