Shadow minister praises UNISON’s work for a living wage water industry

“Thanks to UNISON’s hard work, the water industry is becoming the first multi-company industry to adopt the living wage,” shadow minister Alex Cunningham told delegates at UNISON’s water, environment and transport conference in Brighton today. The shadow minister for water and the environment praised UNISON for its Making Waves for the Living Wage campaign, which calls on all UK water companies to sign up as accredited living wage employers. However, the battle is not yet over – delegates need to keep up the pressure to ensure “the living wage for all in the water industry” by giving water companies that have not yet signed up a deadline, after which they would be publicly named as refusing to pay the living wage. In a wide-ranging speech also covering pensions and the government’s inadequate response to flooding, Mr Cunningham made an immediate call to delegates to “get out there and convince your family and friends to remain in the European Union.” He said the referendum was “monumentally important” and he was delighted that UNISON was campaigning to remain. Describing the referendum as the most important issue of all, he told delegates that: “None of us should be in any doubt that we have the campaign of our lives on our hands.” He continued by saying that remaining in the EU would protect workers’ rights against a government bent on eroding them, as well as being the best f...

Increased groundnut production leads to the accumulation of these groundnut shells which is not utilized, thus either burnt or buried. As Groundnut shells are rich in many functional compounds and composed of cellulose, hemicellulose and lignin, it can be utilized in ...

In this study, lignin peroxidase (LiP) was immobilized by covalent binding onto high-quality Ca-alginate beads using glutaraldehyde as a cross-linking agent. Response surface methodology (RSM) was employed to optimize the operating conditions for optimal immobilization efficiency (IE) and to scrutinize the interactive effects of the processing variables affecting the immobilization efficiency. Influences of various factors such as sodium alginate (0.8, 2.0, and 2.5%), CaCl2 (0.9, 2.2, and 3.4%), and glutaraldehyde concentration (0.1, 0.2, and 0.3 M) on the IE were determined adopting a three-level-three-factor central co...

Species distribution and genetic structure are greatly influenced by the complex life cycle and behavior of odonates. Hetaerina americana has been widely used as a model system in behavioral stu...

In this study, we present the first molecular phylogeny of Pyrgomorphidae that includes the members of all four New World tribes and representative genera from the Old World based on entire mitochondrial genome and four nuclear genes to investigate the biogeography of this fascinating lineage. Our results recover Pyrgomorphidae as monophyletic and the New World Pyrgomorphidae as a paraphyletic group comprising three clades, consisting of: 1) The Caribbean Jaragua + the South American Algete; 2) The Mexican and Central American Sphenarium + Prosphena; and 3) The Mexican lineages Ichthiacridini + Ichthyotettigini. The diverg...

However, the complexity of histopathological images and the dramatic increase in workload make this task time consuming, and the results may be subject to pathologist subjectivity. Therefore, the development of automatic and precise histopathological image analysis methods is essential for the field. In thi...

Two new symmetric squaraine sensitizers (SQIND-1 and SQIND-2) derived from indoline and having pendant bis-COOH as anchor groups to inject the electron into the TiO2 nanoparticles were tested as DSSC. The theoretical calculations and absorbance results s...
