Giant Eagle supplier SunOpta has notified the retailer of a second expansion of the previously reported product recall on its sunflower seeds sold in the bulk section of three northeast Ohio Giant Eagle, Inc. stores due to possible Listeria monocytogenes (Listeria) contamination.

This study explored the effectiveness of high pressure (200–500 MPa) alone or in combination with mild thermal treatments (35 and 50 °C) and nisin (25 and 50-ppm) on the inactivation of L. innocua and E. coli in carrot juice. Processing at 500 MPa at 20 °C for 2 min without nisin resulted in 4- and 5-log CFU/mL reduction of L. innocua and E. coli, respectively while incorporating 25-ppm nisin at same pressure and temperature rendered 7-log CFU/mL reduction. This study evaluated the thermal resistance of L. monocytogenes in cocoa powder and investigated the impact of water activity (aw) on its survival in cocoa powder. Natural unsweetened cocoa powder was inoculated with a 3-strain L. monocytogenes cocktail (∼9.0 Log10 CFU/g), equilibrated to aw 0.30, 0.45 or 0.60 at 22 °C and subjected to isothermal treatments.
