Antidepressants For Kids Ineffective, Potentially Harmful, Study Finds

BOSTON (CBS) — Major depression is usually associated with adults, but quite a few kids suffer from it as well, and more are being treated with antidepressants. But a new analysis published in the journal Lancet finds that most of these drugs are not only ineffective in kids but some may actually be unsafe. Only 1 of 14 antidepressants, fluoxetine, also known as Prozac, was better than a placebo pill at relieving symptoms.  And venlafaxine, or Effexor, was associated with a higher risk of suicidal thoughts and attempts. Experts warn that while depression in kids should remain a priority, current anti-depressants are probably not the answer.
