[Feature] Peace of mind

In 2009, Mohammad Herzallah, a young Palestinian neuroscientist now at Rutgers University in Newark, New Jersey, set up the Palestinian Neuroscience Initiative (PNI), a research and training program at Al-Quds University, whose main campus is in Abu Dis in the West Bank. Despite many obstacles, PNI has already trained dozens of students, won a $300,000 grant with Rutgers from the U.S. National Institutes of Health, and started publishing papers. A key focus is clinical depression, which is rampant in the Palestinian territories. Herzallah, who has won praise from renowned neuroscientists, sees the project as a recipe for "capacity building"—the elusive goal of strengthening research in developing countries.
