A patient referred for prenatal diagnostics, after first-trimester ultrasound due to a previous child with Leber congenital amaurosis, was suggestive of a Meckel syndrome-like phenotype. Fetal autopsy confirmed the multiple anomalies, and whole-exome sequencing of the fetal DNA identified a pathogenic variant in theRPGRIP1 gene, previously identified in the elder sibling, and a variant causative of Meckel syndrome 1 in theMKS1gene. Reporting theMKS1 mutation, which was present in heterozygous state in the elder sibling, as a secondary finding would have enabled the parents to be tested for carrier status of the same varian...

BOSTON (CBS) – We’re smack dab in the middle of cold and flu season, and if you’re a parent of young kids, chances are you’re drowning in runny noses and wet coughs. But according to a new study from the University of Michigan, at least half of parents turn to unproven methods to try to prevent their little ones from getting sick in the first place. More than 50 percent of parents say they give their kids over-the-counter vitamins and supplements, like vitamin C, despite the lack of evidence that they help boost the immune system. And more than 70 percent follow so-called “folklore” advi...

The results demonstrated that the salt-tolerant Malus species could accumulate mo...

In this study, a combination of potentiometry and calorimetry was used for the determination of the thermodynamic values of complexation of typical humic acid and groundwater humic acid, which was isolated from deep groundwater at Horonobe, Hokkaido, Japan, with copper (II) ions and uranyl (VI) ions. The apparent complexation constant of Horonobe humic acid was independent of the pH of the bulk solution, whereas that of typical humic acid was dependent on the pH. This observation indicates that the polyelectrolyte effect of Horonobe humic acid is negligible because of its relatively small molecular size. In addition, the e...

In this work, we explain how N-riched crystalline covalent organic framework (COF) which was prepared through the condensation of 2,4,6- tris(hydrazino)-1,3,5-triazine and 2,4,6-tris(p-formylphenoxy)-1,3,5-triazine serves as an ideal adsorbent for removing cadmi...
