"@deathunderglass is taking over the@muttermuseum@instagram account this week to showcase some of the specimens in the museum collection related to forensic science!@deathunderglass is a collaboration between a forensic pathologist and forensic photographer that generates images of human tissue at high magnification. We tend to think that drug abuse is a social issue that popped up in the last 50 years. Think again - the history of drug abuse in America goes back quite a long way. Elixirs, tonics, and tablets containing cocaine were incredibly popular from the 1850s to the early 1900s and its use was promoted by medical luminaries like famed psychoanalyst Sigmund Freud, who called it a "miracle substance", and stated that there seemed to be "no lethal dose". (Don't listen to him. There is.) Not to mention that Coca-Cola, invented in 1886, is so named for a reason (and no, there's no cocaine in it…anymore.) But drugs go in and out of fashion, just like everything else. In the past few years the number of American deaths from cocaine and heroin has been vastly outnumbered by those due to prescription drug overdoses, especially synthetic opioids like oxycodone and hydrocodone, and more recently, heroin and fentanyl. Forensic pathology insider tip #2: the first two places any new form of drug abuse will show up are the emergency room….and the morgue.
