This study determined the prevalence of complicated appendicitis in elderly patients diagnosed preoperatively with uncomplicated appendicitis.MethodsPatients with a preoperative diagnosis of uncomplicated appendicitis at an academic hospital from 11/2013 to 05/2017 were reviewed. Patients ≥ 65 years were compared to those younger. Pathology reports were categorized as either uncomplicated or complicated (COMP). The primary outcome was the prevalence of COMP appendicitis.ResultsThe prevalence of COMP appendicitis increased with age after 20 years with an abrupt increase after 65 years. Patients ≥ 65 years were more li...

Conclusion: Hypothetical risk factors for obstruction of the vermifor m appendix detected on CT were not associated with acute appendicitis. That suggests that factors other than those related to mechanical obstruction are implicated in the pathogenesis of acute appendicitis.

Conclusions: Short dental implants seem to be an effective alternative treatment for the atrophic posterior ridge. The pooled data revealed that short dental implants have statistically less marginal bone loss and fewer postoperative complications when compared to standard-length dental implants with augmentation. However, there are no statistically significant differences in regard to implant failure.

The interest in radiopharmaceuticals containing radionuclides with suitable emissions for medical therapy (ie, alpha, beta, and Auger emitters) has increased dramatically the past decades. The primary application of these radionuclides is in cancer therapy, but treatment of viral- or bacterial-related diseases has also been studied [1 –6]. Each radiation particle has different biological effects because of different fundamental nuclear properties. Alpha particles, (4He)2+, are considered high linear energy transfer particles (80–100 keV/μm) because they deposit their energy (4–8 MeV) in a rel...

Conclusions: To our knowledge, this is the first BN model developed for the identification of acute appendicitis incorporating imaging variables. It has particular benefit for cases in which variables are missing because prior probabilities are built into corresponding nodes. It will be of use to clinicians involved in ultrasound examination of children with suspected appendicitis, as well as their treating clinicians. Prospective evaluation and development of an online tool will permit validation and refinement of the BN. PMID: 31406613 [PubMed]
