(166) Psychometric evaluation and predictive validity of the sleep and pain behaviors survey in knee osteoarthritis patients undergoing total knee replacement

Insomnia is common among chronic pain (CP) patients, and is linked with greater clinical pain and impaired functioning. Poor sleep habits contribute to chronic insomnia, and behavioral theory postulates that CP patients may develop maladaptive sleep habits to cope with pain, thus perpetuating insomnia, independently from pain. However, little is known about how pain-related sleep behaviors uniquely impact insomnia and pain outcomes among patients with CP. We developed the Sleep and Pain Behaviors Survey (SPBS), comprised of 3 items measuring pain-specific sleep behaviors (i.e., lying down/resting during the day due to pain; spending ≥2 daytime hours in bedroom when in pain, and taking extra narcotics to sleep) to characterize these behaviors among CP patients, and understand how they contribute to insomnia and pain outcomes.
