Clinically-applicable Monte Carlo-based biological dose optimization for the treatment of head and neck cancers with spot-scanning proton therapy
A Graphics Processor Unit (GPU)-accelerated and Monte Carlo-based Intensity Modulated Proton Therapy (IMPT) optimizer was used to escalate the biological dose (BD) in small head-and-neck tumors. Compared to conventional IMPT planning, a modest rise in target physical dose can result in a BD enhancement that is several times as large, without additional detriment to critical structures. This optimizer will be used in a feasibility trial on biological optimization, accrual starting in 2016 at our institution.
