Perspective Nursing the oocyte

The generation of a mature egg, or oocyte, is essential for fertility. The oocyte requires the production of considerable quantities of messenger RNA (mRNA), protein, and organelles during its formation, a store needed for the subsequent development of the fertilized egg. In some species, these components are provided by neighboring cells called nurse cells (1). The role of nurse cells during oocyte development has been well studied in the fruit fly, Drosophila melanogaster, but it has been unclear if mammalian species also have nurse cells. On page 95 of this issue, Lei and Spradling (2) provide evidence for nurse cells during mouse oogenesis, adding to our understanding of mammalian oocyte development and raising hope for new infertility treatments. CONCLUSIONS: By triggering multiple inflammatory and oxidative pathways, the combined administration of SrE, selenium and lycopene might likely improve the sperm quality. Proper studies are needed to test this hypothesis. Finally, since prostatitis can affect the sperm quality and considering the anti-estrogenic properties of SrE, we speculate about a possible specific indication in those patients with male infertility and "metabolic" prostatitis (where obesity and abnormal androgen/estrogen ratio concomitantly occur). Conclusion(s)From a reproductive point of view, there does not seem to be any reason to recommend the increase or the decrease in general physical activity in males from infertile couples. However, additional studies are needed to investigate the relationship between weightlifting and sperm quality.

In this study, we investigated its role in sperm flagella formation and discovered that mice deficiency in Ift74 gene in male germ cells were infertile associated with low sperm count and immotile sperm. The few developed spermatozoa displayed misshaped heads and short tails. Transmission electron microscopy revealed abnormal flagellar axoneme in the seminiferous tubules where sperm are made. In this study, 8-week-old mice were randomly divided into four groups. Mice were fed a normal diet or an HFD with or without SFN supplementation. SFN was subcutaneously injected at a dose of 0.5 mg/kg 5 days/week for 4 weeks beginning 8 weeks after initiation of the HFD. The results demonstrated that SFN could protect against HFD-induced reproductive dysfunction in male mice. Moreover, SFN also improved reproductive ability, as demonstrated by an increased pregnancy rate and decreased embryo resorption rate in comparison to the corresponding HFD group. Infertility and diminished fertility are relevant to pediatric populations, but only beginning to be explored and clinically managed systematically in pediatric settings. This is a significant issue, one that impacts a wide variety of pediatric patients, and complex in abundance of ways. Conceiving and/or giving birth to genetic children is only possible after the onset of puberty and typically occurs volitionally only well after that. However, pediatric patients and their families often need to grapple with fertility concerns well in advance of late adolescence and/or adulthood.
