Molecular evidence of melioidosis among patients suspected for tuberculosis

Background: Melioidosis is an emerging infectious disease caused by Burkholderia pseudomallei. It is endemic in South East Asia and Northern Australia. Clinical manifestation of the infection mimics tuberculosis (TB) by causing acute to sub-acute to chronic disease. We aimed to detect the presence of B. pseudomallei among patients suspected with tuberculosis using a nested Polymerase chain reaction (PCR) and to analyze its risk factors.
