This study analyzed 14 songs written by 11 active-duty service members with post-traumatic stress disorder, mild traumatic brain injury, and psychological health conditions, who received music therapy services at the National Intrepid Center of Excellence, a Directorate of Walter Reed National Military Medical Center in the United States of America. Service members wrote songs over the course of two or more individual music therapy sessions. Latent thematic analysis of the song lyrics yielded four main themes: (a) personal struggles and barriers to recovery, (b) moving forward, (c) relational challenges, and (d) positive r...

The objectives of this report were to assess the effectiveness, harms, cost-effectiveness, and lived experience of CBT for psychosis in improving outcomes for adults with a primary diagnosis of schizophrenia. Methods: We performed literature searches on March 28 and April 5, 2017, and undertook a qualitative synthesis of systematic reviews of the clinical and economic literature comparing CBT for psychosis with any comparator interventions (e.g., usual care, waitlist control, or pharmacotherapy) in adults with a diagnosis of schizophrenia as defined by any criteria (including related disorders such as schizoaffective d...

Publication date: Available online 16 November 2018Source: The Arts in PsychotherapyAuthor(s): Vered Simhon, Cochavit Elefant, Hod OrkibiAbstractSensory processing disorder (SPD) is a disruption in the organization of sensory input that affects appropriate responses to the demands of the environment. The consequences of SPD in children may include a developmental lag as well as behavioral and emotional problems. Music therapy is particularly suitable for children with a sensory processing disorder because music and the sensory system are both linked to the nervous system. This suggests there is a need to better understand ...

CONCLUSIONAs compared to the control group, a 6-week EAP program did not produce a statistically significant difference with respect to PCL-M and CD-RISC scores, or salivary cortisol. However, our results suggest that EAP may work as well as standard therapy with respect to these parameters. This study supports further inquiry into EAP as a potentially efficacious alternative for veterans suffering from PTSD.

AbstractInternet-based cognitive behavioral therapy (iCBT), provided with guidance, has been shown to outperform wait-list control conditions and appears to perform on par with face-to-face psychotherapy. However, dropout remains an important problem. Dropout rates for iCBT programs for depression have ranged from 0 to 75%, with a mean of 32%. Drawing from a recent study in which 117 people participated in iCBT with support, we examined participant characteristics, participants ’ use of iCBT skills, and their experience of technical difficulties with iCBT as predictors of dropout risk. Educational level, extraversion...

We examined the efficacy of mindfulness-based cognitive therapy (MBCT) as a complementary treatment option. In a prospective, bicentric, assessor-blinded, randomized, and actively controlled clinical trial, 125 patients w ith OCD and residual symptoms after cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) were randomized to either an MBCT group (n = 61) or to a psychoeducational group (OCD-EP;n = 64) as an active control condition. At post-treatment, there was no significant benefit of MBCT over OCD-EP with the Yale-Brown-Obsessive–Compulsive Scale (Y-BOCS) as the primary outcome measure, but with the O...

AbstractTrauma memory processing (TMP) is an empirically supported approach to psychotherapy for posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD). However, TMP is not a single, uniform intervention but instead a paradigm that can be operationalized through a variety of component procedures that have not been systematically elucidated and formally tested. Based on findings from phenomenological/structural and neuroimaging research, a central feature of PTSD is theorized to be the involuntary immersion in trauma memories with diminished awareness or negative appraisals of self and current context. Such intrusive reexperiencing —wh...
