Use of cinacalcet for the management of hyperparathyroidism in patients with different degrees of renal failure.

CONCLUSIONS: Cinacalcet at low doses is effective in the management of SHPT in CKD patients who are not on dialysis. Its use reduces iPTH and calcaemia, without causing serious side effects or significant changes in renal function. PMID: 26906451 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Abstract BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: We performed this study to evaluate serum iron and ferritin concentrations, serum total iron-binding capacity (TIBC), and proportion of overall iron deficiency among patients with non-dialysisdependent chronic kidney disease (ND-CKD). METHODS AND STUDY DESIGN: A hospital-based cross-sectional observational study was conducted on 175 adult patients with stage 3-5 chronic kidney disease (CKD) by using 51 healthy age-sex-matched Vietnamese adults as the control group. We next examined the prevalence of anemia and determined the serum iron and ferritin concentrations and TIBC. ...

Purpose of review The erythrocyte is the most abundant cell type in our body, acting as both a carrier/deliverer and sensor of oxygen (O2). Erythrocyte O2 delivery capacity is finely regulated by sophisticated metabolic control. In recent years, unbiased and robust human metabolomics screening and mouse genetic studies have advanced erythroid research revealing the differential role of erythrocyte hypoxic metabolic reprogramming in normal individuals at high altitudes and patients facing hypoxia, such as sickle cell disease (SCD) and chronic kidney disease (CKD). Here we summarize recent progress and highlight potential ...

Conclusion: The CBD-induced relaxation in hPAs that was reduced in hypertensive, obese and hypercholesteremic patients was endothelium-dependent and mediated via KCa and IP, EP4, TRPV1 receptors. The CBD effect in rats was CB1-sensitive and dependent on the hypertension model. Thus, modification of CBD-mediated responses in disease should be considered when CBD is used for therapeutic purposes.

Conclusion: In ESRD patients under long-term haemodialysis in whom BP was markedly elevated despite administration of many antihypertensive drugs, renal denervation lowered both ambulatory and office BP. The reduction persisted over a 1-year follow-up.

Authors: Wang S, Shang J, Xiao J, Zhao Z Abstract Aims: The aim was to determine whether anti-neutrophil cytoplasmic antibody (ANCA)-positive serology in patients with lupus nephritis (LN) is associated with different clinicopathologic features and outcomes. Methods: In our retrospective analysis, 283 patients were enrolled between 2013 and 2018. Thirty-six patients were ANCA-positive, and this group was compared with the remaining 247 patients who were confirmed as ANCA-negative at the time of biopsy. Results: ANCA-positive LN patients exhibited higher anti-dsDNA antibody titers and serum creatinine levels and lower...

Authors: Tani M, Tanaka S, Takamiya K, Sakaue M, Ito M Abstract Cardiovascular disease is a major cause of death among hemodialysis patients. Hyperphosphatemia induces cardiovascular disease through vascular endothelial dysfunction and calcification. Repetition of a short-term excessive-phosphorus (P) diet causes transient elevations in plasma P and subsequent vascular endothelial dysfunction in normal rats. The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of the P fluctuation on vascular calcification and inflammation in rats after unilateral nephrectomy as an early-stage chronic kidney disease (CKD) model...
