Medtronic wins CE Mark for line of MR-safe CRT-Ds

Medtronic (NYSE:MDT) said today it won CE Mark approval in the European Union for its full line of magnetic resonance imaging safe cardiac resynchronization therapy defibrillators, now approved for use with 3 Tesla MRI machines. The approval includes Fridley, Minn.-based Medtronic’s Claria MRI quad CRT-D SureScan, Amplia MRI quad CRT-D and Compia MRI quad systems, which are also approved for lower-power 1.5 Tesla scanners. “The ability to provide CRT-D patients with access to MRI scans is a significant, necessary advancement that may help save lives. The most common magnetic field strength for an MRI is 1.5T, particularly for cardiac MRI; however, many institutions are installing 3T scanners to provide increased image clarity for conditions involving the brain and spine. With expanded access to 3T scans, physicians can now use a broader spectrum of MRI machines to most accurately diagnose critical and even life-threatening conditions,” J. Schwitter of Switzerland’s University Hospital Lausanne said in a press release. The company said its full platform of cardiac rhythm and heart failure devices and leads previously approved for 1.5T scans are now cleared for full body scans in both 1.5 and 3T MRI machines in Europe. CONCLUSIONS: Further studies are required in order to establish the complicated association between SARS-CoV-2 infection and its effects on the cardiovascular system. Levosimendan is effective in the therapy of chronic heart failure in both mature and old rats, but the duration of its therapeutic effect differs in these age groups. In 15 days after treatment, the myocardium in old rats maintained augmented functionality, whereas in old animals, functional potencies returned to the levels observed prior to the therapy. Stimulation of tissue respiration with combined administration ofL-carnitine and α-lipoic acid against the background of levosimendan treatment prolonged its therapeutic effect in mature, but not in old rats.

Dysfunction of different components within continuous-flow (CF) left ventricular assist device (LVAD) systems may cause adverse cardiovascular and end-organ sequelae. Outflow graft obstruction is a recognized type of LVAD component dysfunction. Ten patients were admitted and treated for LVAD outflow graft obstruction. We present three cases that developed moderate to severe AI while on HeartMate II (Abbott Laboratories, Chicago, IL) LVAD support; hence, TAVR procedure was performed. CONCLUSIONS: The prevalence of heart failure was less in 2017 than the 1.6% value for the year 2009. This can be due to the fact that this study collected patients treated or visited only this one year, while the other study in 2009 assessed patients diagnosed also in the previous 5 years but not appearing at any medical visit in 2009.
