Primary Ewing's sarcoma of the lumbar spine presenting as cauda equina syndrome in a pediatric patient

A 10-year-old girl presented with low back pain, bilateral lower extremity weakness, urinary and fecal incontinence. Physical examination revealed diminished patellar and achilles reflexes. Magnetic resonance imaging of the lumbar spine showed a large mass in the L3 vertebra involving the body and the posterior elements with a soft tissue component causing invasion of the psoas, paraspinal and erector spinae muscles on the right side (Figs.1,2). The lesion had an epidural component causing spinal canal stenosis and compression of the cauda equina.
