Abstract OBJECTIVE: To assess the accuracy of a combination of CT texture analysis (CTTA) and nodal axial ratio to detect metastatic lymph nodes (LNs) in esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (ESCC). METHODS: The contrast-enhanced chest CT images of 78 LNs (40 metastasis, 38 benign) from 38 patients with ESCC were retrospectively analyzed. Nodal axial ratios (short-axis/long-axis diameter) were calculated. CCTA parameters (kurtosis, entropy, skewness) were extracted using commercial software (TexRAD) with fine, medium, and coarse spatial filters. Combinations of significant texture features and nodal axial ratio...

AbstractEsophageal squamous cell carcinoma is the most predominant malignancy of the esophagus. Its histological precursors (dysplasia) emerge in the esophageal epithelium that their progression into the underlying layers leads to cancer. The epithelium is the origin of many solid cancers and, accordingly, the focus of numerous computational models. In this work, we proposed a framework to establish a two-dimensional, globally coupled map to model the epithelium dynamics. The model aims at diagnosing the early stage of dysplasia based on microscopic images of endoscopic biopsies. We used the logistic map as a black-box mod...

In this study, we found that ivermectin, an effective antiparasitic drug that has been approved for patients to orally treat onchocerciasis for over 30 years, displayed potent antitumour activity against ESCC cells in vitro and in nude mice. We demonstrated that ivermectin significantly inhibited cell viability and colony formation, and induced apoptosis through a mitochondrial-dependent manner in ESCC cells. Ivermectin also abrogated ESCC cell migration, invasion, as well as the protein levels of MMP-2 and MMP-9. Mechanistically, ivermectin strongly inhibited the expression of PAK1; by further gain- and loss-of-funct...

Abstract iRhom2 is an inactive rhomboid protease involved in diverse signalling events. It has been implicated in the pathogenesis of a number of cancer types, including oesophageal and ovarian cancer, while its closely associated family member, iRhom1, is implicated in head and neck cancer. However, a role for iRhom2 in head and neck cancer has not been investigated. Immunoblotting for iRhom2 in 54 oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC) and 24 paired normal tissues demonstrated higher levels of iRhom2 protein in tumour compared with normal samples (P

ConclusionsEndoscopists should be aware that SMTs or erosions, even those smaller than 10  mm, can indicate local recurrence after complete response to definitive chemoradiotherapy. Follow-up endoscopy should be performed within 1–2 months if findings suggestive of local recurrence are observed on prior endoscopy, even when biopsy results are negative.

In conclusion, INFc is an independent risk factor for lymph node metastasis and an independent inferior prognostic factor for stage T1 ESCC. Furthermore, INFc is associated with immunosuppression, and the combination of the INF and TILs is useful for the risk stratification of prognosis.
