I performed 500-1000 liver biopsies, for various etiologies of liver disease, including Hep C, diagnosis of nodules, iron storage problems, etc. We never experienced any significant problems with bleeding. A few patients had some post procedure pain, which I attributed to a small amount of post procedure hemorrhage. We checked the patient's platelet count pre-procedure. Also, we tried to avoid biopsying what we thought could be a hemangioma, although a partner biopsied a hemangioma without problem. I would be interested in whether anybody is still concerned about excessive bleeding from biopsied hemangiomas.
