Dialectal and gender differences in nasalance for a Mandarin population. Clin Linguist Phon. 2016 Feb 6;:1-12 Authors: Kim HK, Yu XM, Cao YJ, Liu XM, Huang ZM Abstract The purpose of this study was to determine whether there are dialectal and gender related differences in nasalance of main Mandarin vowels and three sentences in 400 Chinese normal adults. The mean nasalance score difference for dialect and gender was significant (p Beijing> Shanghai> Guangzhou for the nasal sentence, oro-nasal sentence, /a/, /i/ and /u/. In addition, the average nasalance scores of females were higher than those of males for all speech materials in all dialects. The clinical significance of this study can be helpful in making nasalance clinical decisions for Chinese people with cleft palate, hearing disorders and dysarthria with resonance disorders. In this study, we present our 15-year surgical experience with tongue flaps for large palatal fistulas. A total of 34 patients who underwent tongue flap surgery at our institution between January 2000 and January 2015 were retrospectively analyzed. CONCLUSIONS &IMPLICATIONS: Whilst a medical model and linguistic approaches are often central in assessments of age-3 cleft speech, this review highlights the importance of developmental and functional approaches to assessment. Cross-linguistic single-word assessments show potential, and would facilitate the comparison of UK speech outcomes with other countries. CONCLUSIONS: These new genetic variants will add to the spectrum of known OFD1 mutations associated with the OFD1 disorder. Our study also confirms the variable phenotypic presentation of OFD1 and its well-recognized association with central nervous system malformations and renal anomalies. ConclusionsUnsurprisingly, both the inpatient and outpatient burdens of care are influenced by the complexity of the cleft and increase with worsening severity. Our results will help inform parents of the likely trajectory their child will face when diagnosed with each subtype of cleft. The 2014 data shows that modern cleft care is changing; a combination of reduced hospital stay and the addition of streamlined outpatient appointments will both be of great benefit.
