The precise regulation of synaptic dopamine (DA) content by the DA transporter (DAT) ensures the phasic nature of the DA signal, which underlies the ability of DA to encode reward prediction error, thereby driving motivation, attention, and behavioral learning. Disruptions to the DA system are implicated in a number of neuropsychiatric disorders, including attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and, more recently, autism spectrum disorder (ASD). An ASD-associated de novo mutation in the SLC6A3 gene resulting in a threonine-to-methionine substitution at site 356 (DAT T356M) was recently identified and has been show...

Authors: Furuhashi Y Abstract Sleep-related eating disorder (SRED) is characterized by recurrent episodes of eating during the night, accompanied by partial consciousness and followed by limited recall. Zolpidem is a sedative-hypnotic drug commonly used to treat sleep disorders. Zolpidem reduces sleep latency and increases the total time of sleep. Here, we described a case of a patient with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) who suffered from zolpidem-induced SRED. The symptoms disappeared when the use of zolpidem as discontinuation. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first documented case of SR...

Behavioral comorbidity is the rule rather than the exception in autism spectrum disorder (ASD), and the co-occurrence of autistic traits with subclinical manifestations of other psychiatric syndromes (e.g. anxiety, developmental coordination disorder) extends to the general population, where there is strong evidence for overlap in the respective genetic causes. An ASD “comorbidity” can have several fundamentally-distinct causal origins: it can arise due to shared genetic risk between ASD and non-ASD phenotypes (e.g., ASD and microcephaly in the context of the MECP2 mutation), as a “secondary symptom&rdquo...

ConclusionsThis study suggests that prenatal stress may be associated with ASD and ADHD; however, several limitations in the reviewed literature should be noted including significant heterogeneity and there is a need for carefully controlled future studies in this area.

I have found that a rowboat provides an analogy that may help parents better understand the different types of learning and behavior problems. Different types of learning problems may present in similar ways, but they are different and need to be treated with different approaches. I typically start by helping the parents or guardians imagine the child is out in the middle of a lake, in a rowboat, going around in circles. We are on the shore trying to figure out what is going on.
