This article describes the creation, development and ongoing evaluation of a burn training program, created in conjunction with the Canadian Network for International Surgery, for parts of east Africa. Selecting the best and brightest: A comparison of residency match processes in the United States and CanadaPlastic surgery remains a competitive field, with many candidates applying to a limited number of residency programs in Canada and the United States annually. However, Canadian programs de-emphasize academic measures and use distinctly different criteria that are less objective than their American counterparts. This survey-based study compared and contrasted the two systems, and sought to determine the characteristics and aptitudes best suited to successful residency in plastic surgery. Goal-directed fluid therapy for microvascular free flap reconstruction following mastectomy: A pilot studyFluid replacement is an important aspect of surgery and is particularly challenging in patients undergoing microvascular free flap reconstruction. The use of vasopressors can compromise blood flow to the flap, a problem also encountered with inadequate volume replacement, which can lead to ischemia and flap loss. However, excessive perioperative fluid administration may lead to flap loss resulting from venous engorgement and flap edema. This uncertainty, in part, prompted the authors of this pilot trial to hypothesize that tailoring fluid management using a goal-directed approach may be...
