Grading and staging of urothelial neoplasm are the most crucial factors in risk stratification and management; both necessitate optimal accuracy and consistency. Several updates and recommendations have been provided though recent publications of the 4th edition of the World Health Organization classification, the 8th edition of the American Joint Committee on Cancer staging system, and the International Consultation on Urological Diseases –European Association of Urology updates on bladder cancer. Updates and recent studies have provided better insights into and approaches to the challenging scenarios in grading and...

Authors: Sghaier I, Zidi S, Mouelhi L, Ghazoueni E, Brochot E, Almawi WY, Loueslati BY Abstract BACKGROUND: Chronic infection with hepatitis B (HBV) and C virus (HCV) is linked with a pro-inflammatory state, predisposing to cirrhosis and liver cancer, particularly hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). A role for toll-like receptor (TLR) signalling in hepatocarcinogenesis was recently documented. We hypothesised a link TLR3 and TLR4 polymorphisms and HCC, as surrogates for the significance of TLR signalling in the promotion and initiation of HCC. MATERIALS &METHODS: We recruited 174 HCV-infected patients, 100 HBV-...

Human β-defensin 1 update: potential clinical applications of the restless warrior. Int J Biochem Cell Biol. 2018 Sep 17;: Authors: Álvarez ÁH, Velázquez MM, de Oca EPM Abstract Human β-defensin 1 (hBD-1) is a multifaceted antimicrobial peptide being a tumour suppressor and, depending on call of duty, capable of inducing self-nets and neutrophil extracellular traps (NETs) to trap and/or kill bacteria, participates in inflammatory responses in chronic diseases including hBD-3 upregulation and also capable of up/downregulation in the presence of certain species of Lactobac...

Conclusion: To address the many challenges posed by EDCs, we argue that Africans should take the lead in prioritization and evaluation of environmental hazards, including EDCs. We recommend the institution of education and training programs for chemical users, adoption of the precautionary principle, establishment of biomonitoring programs, and funding of community-based epidemiology and wildlife research programs led and funded by African institutes and private companies. https://doi.org/10.1289/EHP1774 Received: 16 February 2017 Revised: 22 May 2017 Accepted: 24 May 2017 Published: 22 August 2017 Address correspond...

We describe a case of a 39-year-old woman suffering from peri-umbilical pain and increased abdominal size for one year, anorexia, asthenia, weight loss, occasionally dysuria and dyspareunia, and four months amenorrhea. Laboratory data revealed cancer antigen 125 (CA-125) level of 132.3 U/mL, erythrocyte sedimentation rate of 42 mm/h, and gamma-globulins of 2.66 g/dL. Computed tomography scan showed loculated ascites. It was initially suspected a carcinomatous origin, but ascites evaluation was negative for malignant cells. Magnetic resonance imaging from another hospital showed endometrial heterogeneity. Therefore, an endo...

A number of drugs already approved to treat parasitic infections, cancers, infertility and other conditions also show promise as antibiotic agents against staph and tuberculosis infections, according to a new study. Because these agents act against multiple targets within the bacteria, it may be harder for bacteria to develop resistance, say the researchers.
