Implantation of SphinKeeper TM : a new artificial anal sphincter

Conclusion SphinKeeperTM can be safely implanted in patients with FI of different etiology. Implantation was well tolerated with no dislodgment of implants at 3-month follow-up.

CONCLUSIONS: Targeted MRI/TRUS fusion-guided focal HIFU allows local tumor ablation, but is not free from limitations. The procedure has good functional outcomes and a quick recovery. Multicenter trials with more patients are required to determine the procedure´s role in the prostate cancer therapy algorithm. PMID: 30093211 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Purpose of review Options for prostate cancer management are rapidly expanding. The recent advent of MRI technology has led to guided prostate biopsies by radiologists working in-bore or by urologists using MR/US fusion technology. The resulting tumor visualization now provides the option of focal therapy. Currently available are highly directed energies – focused ultrasound (HIFU), cryotherapy, and laser – all offering the hope of curing prostate cancer with few side effects. Recent findings MRI now enables visualization of many prostate cancers. MR/US fusion biopsy makes possible the targeted biopsy of s...

Age-related external anal sphincter muscle dysfunction and fibrosis: possible role of Wnt/β-catenin signaling pathways. Am J Physiol Gastrointest Liver Physiol. 2017 Dec 01;313(6):G581-G588 Authors: Rajasekaran MR, Kanoo S, Fu J, Nguyen ML, Bhargava V, Mittal RK Abstract Studies show an age-related increase in the prevalence of anal incontinence and sphincter muscle atrophy. The Wnt/β-catenin signaling pathway has been recently recognized as the major molecular pathway involved in age-related skeletal muscle atrophy and fibrosis. The goals of our study were to 1) evaluate the impact of norma...

Studies show an age-related increase in the prevalence of anal incontinence and sphincter muscle atrophy. The Wnt/β-catenin signaling pathway has been recently recognized as the major molecular pathway involved in age-related skeletal muscle atrophy and fibrosis. The goals of our study were to 1) evaluate the impact of normal aging on external anal sphincter (EAS) muscle length-tension (L-T) function and morphology and 2) specifically examine the role of Wnt signaling pathways in anal sphincter muscle fibrosis. New Zealand White female rabbits [6 young (6 mo of age) and 6 old (36 mo of age)] were anesthetized, and ana...

Conclusion Endo-anal sonography might be a good screening tool for early detection of postpartum anal sphincter damages. However, further prospective cost benefit studies should be performed to propose it as a standard of care.
