Osteoarthritis of the hip and knee are the most common causes of arthritis disability. As OA continues to grow in prevalence and burden, much more remains to be learned from a public health perspective about its incidence, prevalence, progression, and the factors associated with each. This need has been described in documents such as the 1999 National Arthritis Action Plan - A Public Health Strategy, and is a priority for the CDC Arthritis Program. The need is also documented in the recommendations of the 2010 National Public Health Agenda for Osteoarthritis.
