Surgical site infections (SSI) following lower limb varicose vein surgery: redo surgery doubles the risk of SSI

Around one-third of adults aged 18 to 64 years have varicose veins.1 Several treatment options exist now for varicose veins: surgery, sclerotherapy, radiofrequency or laser ablations, and conservative therapy with compressive stockings. Despite recent developments in minimally invasive treatment options, surgery remains an effective treatment and is the only treatment which offers long-term effectiveness data whereas other less invasive procedures (even though associated with shorter periods of disability and less pain) only provide short term effectiveness data2.
