Annals of Neurology: Volume 78, Number 5, November 2015

ON THE COVER: Definitive diagnosis of rare causes of infectious encephalitis often relies on tissue from brain biopsies, such as this immunohistochemical stain showing free‐living Balmuthia mandrillaris trophozoites surrounding a cerebral blood vessel, in a case of Balmuthia encephalitis (Courtesy of Dr. M.K. Keating, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention). Wilson and colleagues, on page 722 in this issue, show how deep sequencing of DNA from cerebrospinal fluid can make this diagnosis, and may make this sort of brain biopsy unnecessary in the future.
